Railway Infrastructure Boost: Bhivpuri Car Shed To Enhance Mumbai Local Services
Mumbai’s Rail Network Gets Major Boost: Bhivpuri Car Shed Work Begins After 13-Year Wait”, New maintenance facility to house 20 local trains, support upcoming Panvel-Karjat corridor as part of MUTP-3
For millions of Mumbaikars who squeeze into packed local trains twice daily, help is finally on the way. After 13 long years, workers have broken ground on a new train maintenance shed in Bhivpuri near Karjat – the first such facility since Virar got one in 2012.
This isn’t just another infrastructure project. For people like 42-year-old office-goer Priya Sharma, who spends 4 hours daily commuting from Karjat to CST, it means hope for fewer breakdowns and more reliable service. “Maybe now we won’t have to deal with so many delayed trains,” she says, wiping sweat from her brow on a crowded platform.

What This Means for Everyday Commuters
- More trains in good condition: The shed will care for 20 full-length local trains, meaning fewer breakdowns during your rush hour commute
- Better maintenance: With proper washing and inspection lines, trains will be cleaner and safer
- Future-ready: Designed to support new routes like the upcoming Panvel-Karjat line
Construction worker Raju Yadav, 28, pauses from digging to explain: “We’re building the foundation first – proper drainage, strong walls. This work might be invisible, but it’s what keeps trains running smoothly later.”
It will also serve the Panvel-Karjat corridor (74% complete under MUTP-3), easing operations on the busy Kalyan-Karjat section.
Why It Took So Long
Land acquisition across seven villages wasn’t easy. Farmers like the Patil family had to be assured their livelihoods would be protected. “We gave up some land,” says 65-year-old Devdatta Patil, “but they promised jobs for our young people too.”
Railway officials admit the delay was frustrating. “Every day, 7.5 million people depend on our trains,” says spokesperson A. Deshmukh. “This shed helps us serve them better.”
As the afternoon sun beats down on the construction site, there’s a sense of purpose. The project won’t solve all of Mumbai’s train troubles overnight, but for weary commuters, it’s a welcome step forward.
